Review Highlights
Good cycling app
I got back into cycling about a year ago. I tried some of the other app and landed on this one for its realism. I love the videos
I will say the challenges which have typically been very inclusive of all rider levels are now geared towards more advanced riders. This is frustrating. 1,500 feet inclines are high level and thus not inclusive. Would be nice to create challenges for all level of rider.
Not quite sure how some of the metrics work. My personal history shows my average speed at 49 MPH. Not sure how this is feasible. Which I believe skews how I am set up in groups when I do rides. I historically come in last place on all my ride groups.
Small gripes but I really enjoy this app. I do hate coming in last in every race due to my average speed but I can live with it.
Great scenery and challenges!
I am 84 and try to keep up with the challenges but some are just too difficult to handle for me as I am on oxygen when exercising and sleep!
But I enjoy what I can do at my own pace!
Beautiful scenery the photographers are very good at what they do!
I will continue with this app!
There is a huge difference in the age category of +64 at 84 I can compete with 74+ not the +64group? 😅
Unstable, full of bugs
iPad Pro M4, 1 gig fiber, app buffers, crashes, buffers, doesn’t show keyboard for text input, force quit several times, finally loads, buffers. I’m using other workout apps with video streams, none of them have these issues.
As
Merci 🙏🏻
No garmin watch support
I have a garmin epic 2 watch. The same platform as the Fenix 7 except a different display. It is the garmin top of the line watch, about $1000. I was hoping Kinomap would work for me but it kept loosing connections to my wahoo bike and my watch. It would connect but partway through my exercise it would drop it. Support tells me my watch isn’t supported. Hmm. Really. First I’m suspect that the information is not true and if it is true how could they not support the Garmin top of the line exercise watch?
You won’t regret this app
Very easy to use also haven’t had any trouble
Poor performance, not worth the troube
The app spends more time buffering than working properly. Better off with just ErgData. Also, the times you are up against are impossible to match or beat. Splits of less than a minute? When doing a challenge the app does not show me what challenges I am currently participating in.
Larger text is awesome
Thank you for making the data easier to see for non video training modes! I can see the time and data while rowing now! Big improvement!!
Unusable
Tried to create an account would not accept it? logged in with my email because it was acting like I already had an account, it said it would send me something to change my password never showed up most unusable app I’ve ever tried. AVOID
Poor syncing to Strava
In the app, it shows you you doing a virtual run, even though you select walking as your activity. When it syncs to Strava, It shows virtual run as your activity, but will not let you change your activity to a walk. not intended for someone that wants to track their rides, runs, walks separate separately. I was forced to use this app as it’s one of the only apps that would connect to my desk treadmill.
You have to subscribe
I purchased a new treadmill, wanting some scenic walking trails. Downloaded Kinomap and thought it was great: until it said my free trial was over, and I had to purchase a plan. I couldn’t use any features, not the free rides, that I was originally using.
Deceptive, manipulative, dishonest
So my “trial” ended, and with it, every bit of functionality disappeared, including the “free” ones. All I get is a screen that steers me toward paid subscription. Oh, and also the app asks for a review: the choices are “five stars” or “private feedback”.
I guess this app is not designed for people to use for free
I used the free premium version and the app is ok. Nothing too fancy and the calories and miles count are not too precise but it’s alright. I kept using it for free since I don’t care about scenic views or challenges. It was working alright until the late update they also removed the recent activity section from the free version. Now if you want to know how long you excercise you have to pay, I’m guessing in a couple more updates the app will require a payment to be installed on top of the monthly subscription, I’ll be uninstalling it now.
Everything requires a subscription
As the title states, everything requires a subscription. Nothing more than a clickbait app.
No
Just no. Can’t get it to work consistently with the several pieces of equipment I own. Works for a bit and then drops. I have had trouble since day one. Many free apps work much better.
It’s not great but will scratch an itch
Heck it’s not even good really. The resistance is wacky and often way out of league. Video is generally pretty junky especially if you broadcast on a big tv.
Disappointed
Completely disregards and overrides any of your machine’s programs, even in the free ride mode
Good
It’s a good app and connected to my treadmill but it doesn’t control my treadmill im not sure why
Subscription greed
Having to pay $12/month for basic metrics (total miles, total time, etc) is a horrendous model, and why subscription models for simple apps like this have such a bad rep.
Treadmill view
This app is on my Spirit treadmill screen. I open it up and walk on the beach, thru the Forrest, or up a mountain. It automatically adjusts the incline as you go. Throw on some tunes and 30 minutes flys by.
New to indoor rowing
I got a Rogue Echo Rower at the beginning of the year and tried a few different apps but kept coming back to Kinomap. I like how you can row virtually all around the world and now that I have it on my iPad I can really get into the scenery while I’m rowing.
Company difficult to work with and content isn’t great
I signed up for an annual plan and monthly they have been charging my card. The first month I notified them of this error they refunded my account. The second month I received no feedback to my emails to the support team. The content isn’t the greatest either. Overall not what I was expecting and I haven’t been using the app.
Beginner
Learning as I go along
I have a Joroto rowing machine and it is not one that I can sync fully with all features of the app, however the videos and training are worth it, for now. All the best to you!
No Free Option
App is decent enough but once your free trial is over it makes you have to pay in order to use the app. It says there's a free option but every time you open the app and try to go click free ride or click anything on the screen, it pops up with a notification that your trial is overand you can't get rid of the pop up. $89 a year there are much better apps.
Free not an option
The functionality is so basic as to be unusable once the free trial ends. There are only 20 rowing workouts available and you can’t even view your workout history. I did 6 workouts during the 2-week trial so I did not have the opportunity to explore enough of the app to determine if purchasing is worth it. I will be looking for another app.
Great, when it works
I loved this app for the short time it worked properly. I signed up for the monthly subscription and was enjoying it for a few days. However, less than a week into my subscription, i was getting ready to go for a run with the app and it tells me that i need to sign up for premium service. Well, I had already paid for this service for a month. I tried logging out and back in, but now get a message that says “log in is impossible” when using same Apple credentials that i had used to initially use the app and get the subscription. Then i tried to uninstall and reinstall, but got the same problem. I have contacted customer service through their support site and their listed email address, but have not received a response. I’m going on 3 days of having zero access to an app that I paid for.
Kinomap Support Came Through
After working with several Support staff at Kinomap I did get a very helpful person today who figured out with a lot of effort where my second account was. She closed the account which I had not been able to do after months of trying and is refunding my money for the duplicate account. I appreciate her efforts!
Good, not great
This has been my go to app for indoor rowing since I bought my machine 16 months ago. I never had issues until recently. It seems like this app and the Apple Fitness app aren’t syncing up properly. Recently, when I complete a rowing session I’m not getting the total calories burned appearing in my Apple Fitness app. I used to until very recently. Please fix?
Connection problem
Still have not gotten a solution to my connection problem
Wow, 5 minutes and a fail
There is no way to tell the app I'm not in France. Or where I may be on the planet. Ha!
Lots of bugs
The new version on iPhone if you are doing a free roam on the rowing machine and you try and do a series to your phone. It loses your data for your exercise routine and starts over when you close Siri out. Tried reinstalling the app does not allow you to add a machine in iOS 18 needs Bluetooth updated or something. I don’t know.
Finishing the year but may try alternatives
I like the scenic videos and several of the coached sessions however there aren’t many offerings in English. The structured workouts are pretty solid! Nice to be able to put on and listen to music or podcasts. The app for some reason placed my profile as French when I’m in the USA and I don’t see a way to correct it. Recently the calorie counter stopped synching with my bike and I wrote asking for support but didn’t hear back. I’m giving it a few months to see if there are fixes but will likely try a different app after the year I paid for runs out.
Tedious
Delete App before using. The Potemkin Village of exercise APPs: flashy facade masking shoddy workings.
A bit of a disappointment
A trial period came with the row machine I purchased so I thought I’d give it a try before I purchase a 1 month subscription and I was very excited to to start with the scenic views and timing of each one that I do. I decided to go ahead and spend the $11.99 for a month to give all the features a try. I have had been having an issue getting the app and features to connect to both my iPhone and iPad every time I use it. I contacted support which wasn’t very helpful. The app will not connect to either device when wanting to track anything. If it does, it takes 20-30 minutes and by then I’m frustrated and, frankly, my back hurts from sitting hunched over after I put my feet in the straps waiting and waiting while checking internet on both devices so I decide not to do it that evening. I am on a journey to weight loss and to help bring down some blood work results by getting active and I thought this app could make it more enjoyable.
I *hope* I can get it working otherwise that’s $11.99 down the drain, a lot of wasted time and a lot of unnecessary frustrations.
Good app, needs a lot of work on interface
I use this app for rowing and it is an Overall good app, but it is sometimes difficult to find things and understand what everything means. The set up was a breeze and it works great with my machine. However there is Too much information in your face, and the logo and color scheme of yellow and black is far to agressive. I don’t wanna feel bad and overly intimidated when opening the app, but instead feel welcomed and encouraged to do my best.I see no reason why the logo cannot be redesigned and be blue/green/ purple or any color that does not seem as intense as the yellow and black is. I would slim down the amount of info shown and reduce tabs, prioritizing the important information, and hiding less relevant things. Basically make the app friendlier to use and friendlier to look at. For example, show a rowing route with the scenic view, time, and distance in one box, not in separate locations. Instead of having a little word that says easy, medium or hard, make them into categories that you can select between. Good app, just needs some work. Even by just changing the yellow to a nice blue throughout the app and logo would solve like 50% of the problem
Local Rides!
There are tons of video based rides. I enjoy being able to do local rides when I get free time at night, or if the weather is bad.
Much improved
I was getting worried that the remote display feature was unstable but the latest update seems to have corrected the problem. Once again I’m enjoying beautiful videos of South Pacific islands and bays while I do my 20 minute exercises on my C2 rower. I can only dream of visiting these beautiful places - clear turquoise water - pristine white sand beaches.
Interface redesigned by a lunatic
It used to be easy to select a course by distance. Now, for some reason, it is not. Also, the speeds of you and your competitors may or may not be accurate. Constantly freezes. Looking for an alternative app.
Still no TrainingPeaks upload
It’s probably been at least 18 months since the TrainingPeaks upload stopped working. I’ve made several tech-support inquiries about it and been told that it was going to get fixed. At this point, I’m losing hope.
Doesn’t sync with Training Peaks
Good app but unfortunately received confirmation that their TP integration doesn’t work. This is a dealbreaker for me and frustrating because they claim it does.
Unusable
If you don't subscribe even the basic features of the app are unusable due to popup letting you know you 1 day or 0 days left in your trial. The popup just keeps happening after it is dismissed
Great app, works with Strava
It works well. Connects well with Strava. Good challenges and workout videos
Horrible support
Works on my android phone but numbers are too small to read so I bought a new iPad which can’t find my rower. I borrowed my dad’s iPad and it worked.
Opened a case with Kinomap and gave a lot of details. They closed and marked the case as solved without responding. NO Response and they marked it solved. And I bought the stupid app already.
I opened a follow-up case on their site and almost instantly they marked it solved.
I exchanged my iPad for another new one and it still isn’t working and they have no tech support.
Horrible company… use something else if you can
Love training using this APP
I have been a user now for about 3 years. I live in a area where cycling on the road can be a bit dangerous. Since becoming a subscriber, I have had the luxury of riding in places all over the globe. With the new GPS tracks feature, I have been able to recreate rides from my past racing days, plus using Strava to create routes and upload them to Kinomap; you have a great training tool for any upcoming race. One other great thing is the excellent customer service. The Kinomap team has been very quick to respond to any questions regarding use of their application.
It’s pretty good
Being able to 2 use multiple machines. Tower, bike, treadmill is a real nice feature
Best Thing Ever!
This app is very amazing! Definitely challenges me & I love how it make my work out more enjoyable to do. I actually look forward to doing the tracks.
Six Stars for Kinomap
I switched over here from Rouvy when Rouvy deprecated user uploaded rides. I found the collection of quality rides in Northern California where I live to be amazing, along with lots of iconic and scenic European rides. The quality of Kinomap videos recorded on bike definitely surpasses the soulless car based rides that Rouvy prefers. Nothing like the enthusiasm of a convert! This is a great app and ecosystem - thanks so much!!!
Horrible app
I am trying to connect many times, app doesn’t load video, stupid app, I would like it if working.
Great indoor cycling app, but buggy as of late
Great indoor cycling app, but buggy as of late . The playlist function has been broken for last few releases and no time frame on when this will be fixed. I love to use the playlist function as I setup my weekly runs and rides to control type of workout I do on daily basis .
Fix playlists and I will a 5 star review
Directo XR Elite works with it! Finally an app that works!
I’ve had issues with the Elite trainer pedals lock ing up with Zwift and Wahoo but everything connects easily and works effortlessly with Kinomap! Even connecting Strava was simple. The app doesn’t freeze and it’s cheaper than all the other subscriptions. This is a great app option that is half the price of its competitors. It doesn’t have all the other fitness options /plans bells and whistles like Wahoo but if what you need is a row/bike/run program with simulations and beautiful scenery, a large variety of types and durations of rides, this is the app for you. The video quality is not always great but it’s still nice to ride the Pyrenees or pacific islands, enjoying the views and intensities. This has my vote!!!
Niche filled!
We were so very excited to finally have our dual pain cave, but using Z!47 and R0083 to control our equipment was expensive and cumbersome. Then along came Kinomap, we are now assimilated. We run and bike side by side through the Alps, Rockies, islands of the world. We are seriously contemplating buying a go pro.
There are some kinks that need working out: hard to sync up at first, can’t edit multi-player session, search is difficult to use and no direct connection to Garmin connect. BUT all the beautiful runs/bikes more than compensate for these “glitches”. Tech support is really responsive with hand-offs and status changes properly communicated. If you plan on running AND biking indoors you will want to use Kinomap
Discovery/Challenge
Really enjoy this app however my critique is that the challenge mode seems to be too heavy of a technical lift for the way the video streams as it’s very choppy and all over the place. If my pace is on the higher end it plays cartoonishly fast on some videos depending on the content that was uploaded, and if I lag behind it jitters and stutters pretty severely. The challenge mode is admittedly a very cool concept but I much prefer the smoothness of the discovery mode and above all I would request that discovery be able to sync to Strava. That said you can’t beat the international scenery, the ease of use, the massive gear compatibility or the great subscription price of Kinomap.
My simple setup is an iPhone 12, an iPad Pro as the secondary screen, Apple Watch Series 6 and a modest Merach Bluetooth spin bike.
Amazing Places
I’ve been using this app for a couple of years, riding all over France, Austria, Spain, the Netherlands, England, Japan, Thailand, Australia and even Africa and Cuba from my living room. There’s so many options from flat rides to famous mountain roads and a few Ironman courses. Makes indoor riding so much more interesting! My only complaint is that the video play matches the rider who took it, of course. Since I’m not as fast as some of those dudes, the video has to slow down to wait for me. Wish it wasn’t so dependent on our varying abilities. But there are plenty of vids that match my wattage fine. Just wish it could be across the board. I never would’ve seen so many places around the world without this app!
Like it when it works.
Connecting my topium rower is hit and miss, more misses than hits. When it works, I really like it. It’s pretty cool to paddle around the world. I spend so much time fiddling around with trying to get a connection that I’m too frustrated to row. Right now I’m month to month on subscription and I’d love to do a yearly but not if I can’t use it easily. Will cancel if I can’t figure out what the problem is.
Edit. More stars.
After some playing with the app I have been able to consistently connect. I really like this and I’m glad I got the kinks worked out. The people at Kinomap reached out after my first review, so thank you. I’m not a numbers person so this app is good for me. I intend to stick with it.
Love the content - hate the ongoing crashing at end of rides
I love this app and it’s content and bought a lifetime membership since the content is so great, but for months it has had a nagging problem that the workouts don’t tend to port over to Apple health because the app crashes when finishing a workout, regularly. If the app crashes when saving your workout, it doesn’t give me any option to manually push the workout over to Apple health workouts. I’d like to see the crashing bug fixed or else give an option to manually push these workouts over to Apple health after the crash when the auto push fails. Otherwise, great rides, tons of variety and lots of hard workouts! Great video quality!
Kinomap works great!
I have used another program for several years and had someone suggest I try Kinomap. It works just as well or better than the other program. It is easy to set up, runs my smart trainer well and is quick and easy to use on a daily basis. I could not be happier with Kinomap. I had a few questions when I started and the support team was very quick to get back with me to answer my questions. I love the real video and Kinomap ability to make me feel like I am on the road. I really love how realistic the video is without any cartoon characters riding around.
UPDATE - Works with Xebex firmware update. Does not work with Xebex rower and iPhone
With Xebex rower and IPhone XS, it connects Bluetooth to Kinomap app, but then hangs on “Please wait while fetching additional data about the selected equipment.” I have an open ticket with Kinomap support for three weeks and they say they have been aware of issue, but still not resolved. I verified Xebex rower can connect and send data to other apps via Bluetooth. Will update rating when they fix it....if they ever do.
UPDATE -This was the fault of Xebex and not Kinomap. I had to update the firmware on the XeBex console. Now it works great! Thank you for your help Kinomap.
So much better!
It seems that everyone I know rides on Zwift, but this app is So Much Better!! The rides have taken me all over Europe. I usually filter the rides to give me just the “excellent” and “good” quality videos and have hundreds of options to choose from.
Where do I want to ride today? France, Poland, Germany? Plus KinoMaps let’s me customize my video so I can have all the metrics, if I want, or just the pure feed of the glorious ride video to immerse myself in the experience.
KinoMaps has to find a way to get the word out there. I have told all my cycling friends about this app. Although some prefer the fake scenery and racing/competition feel of Zwift, I know I’ve made a few converts. But no one had ever heard of it before I told them. And I learned about it two years ago via word of mouth.
I’m a fan and hope to continue to convert others to this amazing app.
Love the app
I’m new to biking and love this app. I had a question that was responded to very quickly by the support group via email. I love the videos, as they make riding indoors in the winter on a stationary bike SO much more fun. It’s much easier to stick to an exercise routine when it’s this much fun. I can “travel the world” and never leave my home. It connects very easily via Bluetooth and seems accurate in the stats collected. Great app!!
Outstanding
This app is really, really nice . I’m a walker, using a ‘not so smart’ treadmill and a NPE Runn sensor attached to it. Downloading and installing this app to my iPad was easy and it found my Runn stride sensor immediately. Using this app is intuitive….could not ask for better. Graphic quality is ,real life, and performance is exceptional . Though I have not been able to so far, if I can get Kinomap to pair with my Runn sensor via my WIN10 PC with the Bluestacks emulator software I will subscribe….in a heart beat !!
It’s OK
Only use with KayakPro ergometer. Don’t use video workouts because quite frankly - paddling videos are pretty slow and boring. The structured workouts are extremely limited and weak compared to more robust programs like TrainerRoad, Sufferfest and Zwift. If I could use one of those apps with my kayak erg I would drop this app in immediately but guess I’m stuck with it or the much more limited GymTrakr. The only thing I use this for is FreeRide mode to track power and HR while I do real workouts adapted from TrainerRoad.
Want to like it.
There is a lot of competition in this space. Rouvy and FulGaz offer a better experience with videos. Maybe with better curated content and UI improvements this would be better.
Cons:
- Videos are so-so compared to others
- won’t connect to wahoo tickr
- Videos are wobbly and choppy (depending on speed)
- UI to connect to devices confusing. Other apps much easier and it works
- Need to use a computer or browser to sign up. Can’t sign up in App
Pros:
- content. Although sifting through bad content is a challenge
- better search feature than others
- Map feature against google maps a nice feature.
- nice to compare against other riders who road the route. A virtual icon appears on the map which lets you see where the riders were(are). This isn’t interactive like Zwift, but was a feature I liked.
Almost there
I was at the end of my trial run via my new KICKR Bike and in love with the app but then out of the blue, the most recent app update removed any ability to compare my performances on a given course. My workouts need to be comped on my personal best not only against others. Very disappointed. I would otherwise be lifelong. Will try one of the other apps.
Great update
The new update makes it much easier to find the rides I am interested in. Nice job. Would still like to have virtual cyclists on the screen like the “other app”, rather than the list on the side of the screen and the dots on the map, but still a 5 star app in part because the annual subscription is such a great value.
Elliptical Run
I have a 2023 E95s elliptical . I had a difficult time starting the app. My Elliptical is a new version .
The app worked after 5 minutes of trying .
Now I enjoy the app. I am handicap and physically cannot run. I can on a machine like mine.
I really enjoy the video aspect of going to a place and run through town.
Thank you Mike
Better than Zwift or Rouku
If you like to ride and enjoy variety of scenery and climbing, KinoMaps is so much better than the other apps.
I personally do not want to look at avatars or race against other riders. I ride indoors because I have to, but I always would rather ride outside. So, KinoMaps gives me the closest experience to outdoors I’ve found.
You inspire me
Dear bicycle instructors,
Sometimes in the morning I get up and get on my bike and you take me on a tour through the Alps, along side of a river, up a mountain side, and then through a little town with restaurants and coffee shops. You inspire me, you help keep me healthy, you entertain me, and I am simply amazed at how beautiful this app is and how fantastic the instructors are. Thank you,
K Rey
Best app for scenic rowing videos I’ve found
I like indoor rowing and this app has all the features I was looking for. I can row along to hundreds of scenic videos while tracking my power and stroke rate. It syncs with Strava fine. If you have trouble connecting your c2 rower, I had luck connecting to my ErgData app first and then opening Kinomap
Great app
I wanted an app for indoor riding where I could go to real places. I did the trial, tried some others and came back for the price, experience and app functionality. Lots of content, good videos and I believe this platform is only going to get better and better.
Incompatible with “SmartRower” machine by WaterRower
This app claims to be compatible with WaterRowers, but I could not get it to connect to my “SmartRower” machine, even when selecting equipment from the “SmartRow” category. I just get a spinning wheel on non-connectivity and frustration — this on top of the frustration I already experienced when I learned my “SmartRower” was not compatible with WaterRower’s own “WaterRower TV” app, which touts similar globe-hopping features.
Please fix this app so it works with SmartRow’s Bluetooth implementation. I’d love to use but can’t even get my boat in the virtual water.
Great fun!
The app works as advertised. I’m learning all the options and don’t mind poking around to figure it out. I find it highly motivating to row with others while I’m in the comfort & safety of my own basement. I find I’m rowing faster than before using the app. My endurance isn’t built up yet but I know I’m getting a quality workout.
Fun app...amazing videos
I use Kinomap together with my WaterRower. Prior to Kinomap rowing work out were visually boring. Kinomap has changed that. Additionally, their customer support is very responsive. Good job.
Now I am using the app, after watching the GCN video, for my bike rides. This and ZWIFT is making winter more tolerable. Who am I kidding, I live in So. Cal., we have no winters here. LOL. Stiil, this app is DA Bomb. Thanks.
Yet another terrible rowing app
Doesn’t actually write kcals to Apple Health, but it doesn’t matter because it’s calorie estimate was significantly lower than the range it should been. Didn’t write the full 30 minutes to Health. Thinks I weigh 701 lbs. I need to lose weight, sure, but that’s over 2.5 times the weight currently recorded in Apple Health. On the positive side it did connect with my C2 PM5 without issue. However, it didn’t seem to care about the heart rate sensor connected to the PM5. Also, there is no integration with the C2 logbook.
pretty good
Used only for rowing. I’d like more control of the stats shown on the screen. For example, it like to see workout time instead of where I am in the video, and would love to see both a graph of watts expended over time and a stroke-force profile. otherwise good.
Sightseers' Delight
It's so fun and engaging to ride in exotic places on Kinomap! It works well with my Kicker bike trainer and my Concept2 rowing machine.
The one thing that would make it perfect is if there were a way to change the highlighted metric to Heart Rate. Currently, it can only be set to either Power or Speed. The Heart Rate value is so tiny!
Want to like
I’ve uploaded 22 videos to Kinomap. I would love to ride them. I’ve also been a paid subscriber for a few months but can’t figure out how to pair my own equipment besides my Wahoo kicker with Kinomap. I would like to use my own Garman power meter and my own Garmin heart rate monitor. And if I can’t figure out how to do that I have to delete the app. Zwift and Rouvy make it very easy to pair things.
Very good app
I am enjoying this app as a result of the immense library of maps and scenic views. The app is consistent and uses my Bluetooth technology well as well as monitors the whites of energy calories and RPMs. I’ve only had it for less than a month, but so far I’m impressed.
