Fixtures & Calendar Integration — Market Evidence Pack

Informs: Spec decisions on Marlo's fixtures/calendar build

TL;DR — what should change the spec
  1. 1

    Calendar sync is the most consistently punished capability within core fixtures/scheduling functionality

    (not the single most-punished thing in the whole corpus — a direct count of negative, ≤2★ mentions across the named-competitor set puts ads/advertising, chat/messaging, and crashes/bugs all well ahead of calendar/sync by volume; re-verified this session: chat 1,022, login/auth 346, calendar/sync 135 negative mentions). Within its own scope, though, it's punished for four distinct, separable reasons — Android/iOS parity gaps, paywalling it, plain unreliability, and timezone/DST handling (n=22, TeamSnap/Spond/Pitchero, 2013-2025 — added by semantic recall, see Pattern 7). Treat "calendar sync" as four separate acceptance criteria, not one feature. (A related but distinct issue — notification volume, not calendar sync itself — is covered separately in Pattern 8 and Trap 7 below.)

  2. 2

    Never paywall the RSVP/availability loop or a multi-team/multi-child consolidated schedule view.

    Every time a competitor did this it produced an immediate, tightly-dated wave of "I'm switching" reviews — including from reviewers who were otherwise 4-5 star fans. Two separate, extremely concentrated incidents document this below (n=22 and n=21 reviews in mail-you-can-set-your-watch-by windows of under a month).

  3. 3

    Don't ship a fixtures/availability UI overhaul near a season start without heavy regression testing.

    Pitchero's August–September 2017 release is a clean case study: it broke fixture display and availability simultaneously, right as clubs were onboarding for the new season, and produced 21 reviews (18 of them 1-star) inside five weeks.

  4. 4

    Model recurring events as a true series, not N independent entries.

    Duplicate/orphaned calendar entries when a recurring training slot changes is a confirmed bug across TeamSnap, Spond, and an adjacent app (TeamHub) — and only 2 of the 40+ catalogued competitor apps in this corpus even attempt proper recurring-event handling.

  5. 5

    The unmet-demand signal here is unusually direct and unusually old.

    Reviewers have been asking for exactly what Marlo is about to build — one-tap "add to calendar," Android/iOS parity, granular per-match availability, a reason-for-declining field — since at least 2013, and are still asking in 2026. This is close to a pre-validated spec.

What users punish (done poorly)
01

Android/iOS calendar-sync parity gap

n = 38 TeamSnapHejaTeamer 2013-03-28 → 2025-11-01

TeamSnap's calendar sync works on iPhone/Apple Calendar and has been reported broken, absent, or degraded on Android/Google Calendar for over a decade — this is not a one-off bug, it's a sustained platform-parity failure.

You can not just sync to your phone calendar with the app if you have a Samsung phone. If you have an iphone it takes 4 seconds! Been searching hours and no way will work.
TeamSnap ★☆☆☆☆ 2022-10-25 #8970
Won't sync to anything on my phone. My iPhone friends seem to have no problems. Manual entries needed for me.
TeamSnap ★☆☆☆☆ 2017-05-03 #15410
Lack of calendar subscription on android is the worst. My wife can subscribe on her iPhone, but I can't.
TeamSnap ★★☆☆☆ 2021-12-04 #10243
They need to make it easier to sync with outlook Calendar. App to App functions don't sync... Apparently if you use an iPhone it's easier.

same complaint, still live 8+ years after the first report above.

TeamSnap ★★☆☆☆ 2025-11-01 #7297
02

Paywalling the RSVP/availability/calendar-sync loop

n = 99 TeamSnapHejaPitcheroTeamerPlaytomic 2013-04-17 → 2026-03-12

This is the most reliably punished business decision in the corpus. Two incidents are concentrated enough to be case studies in their own right (Section 6).

The free app used to get you availability of players...Now you have to pay $10 a month PER team for that feature... The app itself is five stars, the money grab is the reason for the low rating.

note the reviewer still rated it 4 stars

TeamSnap ★★★★☆ 2018-04-28 #13893
This app is pretty much useless without having to pay a monthly subscription... i realized there is a subscription to use the availability tracker which is all we used it for. I will no longer be using it for my team.
TeamSnap ★☆☆☆☆ 2019-11-20 #11697
You have to subscribe just to have it sync with your calendar... Heja requires you to subscribe to a calendar that is unique to the user which means you can't share calendar events in a shared family calendar.
Heja ★★☆☆☆ 2024-09-13 #592
this doesn't have external calendar syncing to put games into your calendar either unless you pay. Its included free on Spond!
Heja ★☆☆☆☆ 2025-05-28 #995
Om ook het programma met de agenda te synchroniseren moet je betalen. Dat heb ik gedaan. Dat heeft kort gewerkt, maar de app geeft nu aan dat er een betalingsprobleem is.

Correction, not cross-market confirmation — adjacent app (Voetbal.nl, Dutch football federation app). Translation: "To sync the fixture list with your calendar you also have to pay. I did that. It worked briefly, but the app now says there's a payment problem." This reviewer paid for calendar sync and is reporting a billing/reliability bug afterward, not paywall outrage — a 4-star rating confirms it's not the same reaction as the paywall complaints above. Worth keeping only as a reliability data point (even willing payers hit billing failures), not as corroboration of the paywall pattern.

Sync latency and reliability

n = 15 TeamSnapHeja 2015-07-29 → 2025-02-15

n is approximate (n ≈ 15) — thin bucket within the broader calendar-sync bucket, not independently ILIKE-defined.

the calendar function on TeamSnap can take 'days' to update your Google calendar. TeamSnap tech support acknowledges Apple products are updated quickly, while it can take 'days' for calendar updates to arrive for your Google calendar.
TeamSnap ★★★☆☆ 2015-07-29 #16834

TeamSnap ★☆☆☆☆ 2024-09-29 #7745
The directions it provides for syncing to your google calendar is not available. So paying the extra fee is not worth it when you still have to do extra work.

Recurring events not modeled as a true series (duplicate entries, or a single-instance edit corrupting the whole series)

n = 7 TeamSnapSpondTeamHub 2014-07-31 → 2026-04-07

Found by semantic recall — a distinct, tightly-clustered incident inside TeamSnap's own data (reviews 8068, 8059, 8011), all describing the identical bug within 7 weeks.

This is worse than the duplicate-entry symptom above: it's silent, undetected corruption of other instances in the series, not just clutter.

each individual entry is synched separately, and when leaving a group/team, it's a nightmare to clean up manually. The same when e.g. training time changes: You get duplicate entries and will have to delete one individual entry for each and every date.

the single newest review in the entire 17,242-row corpus

Spond ★★★★☆ 2026-04-07 #5476
any adjustments to calendar, like cancellation will keep the original calendar date and set up a new event that is cancelled. Also, when trying to move a date on an entry in the calendar.. sets up a new entry and leaves the old as is. Need the revision capability... and then it's 5 stars for me!

a conciliatory close, not pure negativity; the reviewer is otherwise satisfied.

TeamSnap ★★★☆☆ 2024-05-23 #7056

All-or-nothing sync / no per-match granularity

n = 3 SpondPitchero 2022-05-09 → 2025-05-02

Thin, but internally consistent evidence.

It's all or nothing really. You can't just sync the events you want to attend, you have to sync all the events that are happening within your club. This has been an issue for a few years now... Shame as it's a good app otherwise.

again a conciliatory close; the reviewer still likes the app overall.

Spond ★★★☆☆ 2022-05-09 #4658
Shocking that you can't base selection on a match, just a day. Where multiple matches are on same day, so you select 'yes' or 'no' for all fixtures.
Pitchero ★☆☆☆☆ 2025-05-02 #2918

Timezone / DST handling bugs

n = 22 TeamSnap · 12Spond · 6Pitchero · 4 2013-10-08 → 2025-11-02 semantic recall

Found entirely by semantic recall — the original keyword pass (which never searched for "timezone" or "hour off/ahead/behind/difference") reported this as absent.

This is a distinct engineering failure mode from Pattern 1 (platform parity) — it isn't "Android is missing the feature," it's "the same event shows different times depending on which screen, device, or platform you look at it from," and it corrodes trust in the schedule itself. The 2023-01-05 Spond quote is also a direct, named switching-away-from-the-app-category instance, consistent with the ~1-in-5 pattern documented in briefs/switching_moments/2026-07-18_switching-moments.md.

Spec implication — this belongs in the acceptance criteria, not just the traps list (Section 5, trap 4): store and render every fixture/event time from a single authoritative timezone (the venue's local timezone, or UTC converted at render time) — never resolve display time from device-local timezone detection. Testable: two devices with different OS timezone settings, viewing the same fixture, must show the identical time. The evidence above already covers the concrete failure shapes to write tests against: cross-platform mismatch (17154, 17110), edit-time corruption (3524), multi-device inconsistency for the same event (8585, 8086), and travel/device-timezone drift (4644, 4584, 4617, 4838).

Needs to support different timezones properly. Game schedules are currently a mess.

The times don't line up on your phone app and web browser. There is an hour difference! So frustrating.

TeamSnap's own developer replied to this review: "Sorry about that. We are working on a release that should address the time issues. It should be out in the coming weeks. Hang in there." — a company admission of the bug at first report. Twelve years and multiple further reports later (8585, 8086, 4584), the identical failure mode was still live — it was never the "coming weeks" fix promised.

TeamSnap ★★★☆☆ 2013-10-26 #17154

On one phone, the times show an hour off from the other phone (e.g., 6pm CST vs 7pm CST). Even more confusing is that the home feed on one phone shows 6pm CST for the practice, 7pm CST when listed on the schedule page, and 7pm CDT when the event is opened!!!
TeamSnap ★☆☆☆☆ 2023-04-08 #8585

Why would you not make the time zone setting sync to whatever your phone is? I had no idea this app decided to just randomly have its own setting and decided to set itself to a timezone I might have been in when I installed it and am not in most of the time causing me to miss an event.

Event/invite reminder-notification spam (uncontrollable volume, not the marketing-ads pattern)

n = 14 TeamSnap · 8Spond · 6 2013-01-17 → 2026-02-05 verifier semantic probe

Found by the verifier's semantic probe — a second absence claim overturned this round. The keyword pass's remind% pattern only caught scheduling-reminder language, and the corpus-wide "notifications" bucket is dominated by a different, already-documented ads/marketing-notification pattern — neither surfaced this specific, recurring complaint: users have no way to control the volume of event/invite reminders themselves. Spans nearly the whole corpus, still unresolved in the newest data, and includes two independent account-deletion/app-uninstall cases (one more than was flagged going in — see 4716 below).

Thirteen years apart, the 2013 and 2026 quotes describe the identical unmet need: per-event, per-group, or per-invite notification control, not an all-or-nothing switch. This is distinct from Pattern 6 (excessive calendar permission requests) — that's about what the app can access; this is about what it does once it already has permission, and it's the far more common complaint by volume (n=14 vs n=2).

Spec implication: ship per-event / per-group notification muting from day one, and never force reminder emails that ignore in-app notification settings — both 4587's and 4716's account/app-deletion outcomes were triggered specifically by email reminders persisting after the user had already turned off in-app notifications.

...it sends push notifications to you phone and there is no apparent way to disable that... I don't need an app polling to put something in my system tray reminding me to set my availability for the game, too. Whether I'm in the minority or the majority, there is no reason to put out an app that doesn't have an option to disable that.

The reward pattern is simple and consistent, and it matches what briefs/switching_moments/2026-07-18_switching-moments.md already found for switching narratives generally: users reward having one reliable place for the schedule, location, and reminders — not any particular UI cleverness.

Traps — the avoided-build list
  1. 01

    Paywalling the RSVP/availability loop or any consolidated multi-team/multi-child calendar view. Confirmed twice, independently, as an immediate switching trigger (Sections 1 and 4). This is the single highest-confidence trap in the whole pack.

  2. 02

    Shipping a fixtures/availability UI overhaul near season start without heavy regression testing. Case study — Pitchero, August 26 to September 29, 2017. A single app update broke fixture display and availability simultaneously, right as clubs were onboarding players for the new season. 21 reviews in five weeks, 18 of them 1-star: (3246, Pitchero, Aug 26, ★1): "This update has made it impossible to tell if a fixture is home or away." (3242, Pitchero, Aug 29, ★1): "All fixture data has been lost. Unable to use it." (3222, Pitchero, Sep 18, ★1): "Basic functionality like recording availability is no longer available... which is really poor at the start of the season when all clubs are dealing with subs." (3211, Pitchero, Sep 29, ★1 — the closing word on the incident, quoted verbatim including the reviewer's typo): "A key part of the decision was the availability of the Cub App. All was fine (not without it's teething troubles) until two days before the start of the season when, without any warning, a new version of the app was released."

  3. 03

    Building calendar sync iOS-first and letting Android lag. An 8-year-old TeamSnap bug still reported in the newest data (Section 1, Pattern 1) — this is a "ship both platforms together or don't ship" lesson, not a "get to Android eventually" one.

  4. 04

    Trusting device-local timezone for event display instead of storing and rendering from a single authoritative timezone (the venue's, or UTC). n=22 across three competitors, spanning 2013 to 2025 (Section 1, Pattern 7 — found by semantic recall, not the original keyword pass). The failure mode recurs whenever a reviewer travels, or when their phone's timezone setting and the fixture's actual location disagree — different people looking at the same event see different times, with no error shown to anyone. TeamSnap's own developer admitted the bug on first report in 2013; it was still live in 2025.

    n = 22 2013 → 2025
  5. 05

    Modeling recurring events as independent one-off entries instead of a true series. Root cause of both the duplicate/orphaned-entry bug and the "editing one instance corrupts the whole series" bug, confirmed across three apps and n=7 cases (Section 1, Pattern 4).

    n = 7
  6. 06

    Requesting full calendar read/write permissions instead of an add-only or iCal-feed model. n=2 (upgraded from 1 by semantic recall, both Spond, 2025-2026) — no longer single-reviewer, and it's exactly the kind of privacy-conscious complaint that scales badly once noticed.

    n = 2 2025 → 2026
  7. 07

    Shipping event/invite reminders with no per-event or per-group mute, and forcing reminder emails that ignore in-app notification settings. n=14 across two competitors, 2013 to 2026 (Section 1, Pattern 8 — found by semantic recall). Two independent reviewers deleted their account or the app entirely over this. Pairs with trap 6: both are "the app takes more than the user wants to give it" failures — one about access, one about volume.

    n = 14 2013 → 2026

Recurring events as a true series

Cataloged in only 2 apps (Spond, SportMember) out of 40+ — yet the lack of this is the confirmed root cause of the duplicate-entry bug in Section 1, Pattern 4. Building this properly on day one is a real, evidenced differentiator, not a nice-to-have. Caveat, checked this session: Spond's own recurring_events feature row in app_store_features has a negative user_sentiment (-1.0) carrying a Spanish-language quote — "Da error al intentar crear un evento periódico" ("Gives an error when trying to create a recurring event") — while the row's source field is labeled description (i.e. sourced from Spond's own app-store listing text, not a review), which is internally inconsistent with a review-derived sentiment quote and review ID attached to it. Whatever the labeling bug, the quote itself indicates Spond's recurring-event creation flow errors out — so even the one app credited with series modeling has direct evidence it doesn't reliably work. The real differentiation bar is "series modeling that actually works end-to-end," and the gap may be wider than the "2 apps have it" count suggests.

Bulk fixture/schedule upload

Cataloged in exactly 1 app (Crossbar Mobile), and even there it's a user request, not a delivered feature. No competitor in this corpus has shipped it.

Granular "maybe"/tentative RSVP status and per-match (not per-day) availability

Requested repeatedly across Heja, Spond, Pitchero, and Teamer reviews (Section 3) but not delivered by any competitor in the review-verified evidence — every app in this corpus that was checked forces a binary yes/no, or applies availability to an entire day rather than a specific match.

Methodology
How this evidence was gathered and verified — full record

Compiled 2026-08-16. Corpus: 17,242 reviews (mostly Google Play), analyzed via the analysis table (schema v8) plus app_store_features (4,516 rows) across the named competitor set (config/competitors.yaml) and adjacent App Store apps. Newest review in the corpus is dated 2026-04-09 — treat anything from 2026 as current, and read pre-2020 quotes as historical color for apps that may have since fixed the issue (noted per-pattern below where relevant).

Verification standard applied: every quote below was either (a) lifted directly from reviews.text that I queried myself — verbatim by construction, no separate lookup needed — or (b) cross-checked against the review it's attributed to in app_store_profiles.review_sample before use. I ran this check against 85 candidate quotes from 31 adjacent (non-core) competitor apps: 60 verified, 1 recovered via broader search, 24 rejected (quote didn't appear verbatim under the cited review ID) — a 28% rejection rate on that slice, higher than the corpus-wide ~9% the audit found, likely because smaller/less-reviewed apps have thinner review_sample coverage. None of the 24 rejects are used anywhere below. Reviewer names are stripped throughout; only review IDs are cited. Retrieval method — keyword recall was upgraded with semantic recall. The initial pass used ILIKE keyword patterns (fixture%, schedul%, calendar%, availab%, rsvp%, sync%, remind%, attend%), which by construction misses complaints that never use those words. document_embeddings (16,832 rows: 13,701 reviews, 2,349 app descriptions, 534 briefs, 248 research chunks — all-MiniLM-L6-v2, 384-dim, keyed to reviews.review_id, 100% join coverage on the review rows) turned out to be genuine, usable review embeddings, so I embedded 10 probe phrases describing fixture/calendar pain and satisfaction in plain language (no jargon overlap with the keyword list) and ran cosine-similarity nearest-neighbor search directly — the model runs locally, so no API cost. This surfaced 136 unique reviews the keyword pass never touched, and overturned one claim I had already reported as an absence of evidence: timezone/DST bugs are real and recurring (n=22 across three competitors, 2013–2025 — see Pattern 7), not the "nothing found" I told team-lead in the first pass. It also upgraded Pattern 6 from n=1 to n=2 and surfaced a new data-integrity bug (Pattern 4 addendum) and new unmet-demand quotes (Section 3). A second absence claim fell in the adversarial-review round: event/invite reminder-notification spam (n=14, Pattern 8) — the keyword pass's remind% pattern only caught scheduling-reminder language, and the corpus-wide "notifications" bucket is dominated by a different, already-documented ads/marketing-notification pattern, so neither surfaced this specific complaint. Everything semantic recall surfaced was still put through the same Direct/review_sample verification standard above before use — recall method changed, verification bar didn't.
